Chat with the Brigadier

Posted on Sat May 2nd, 2020 @ 8:55am by Lieutenant Commander Ashley Solomon & Brigadier General Leah Katana

Mission: Mission One: A New Beginning...(Backstory)
Location: Commanders Office, Hawkeye Island
Timeline: Following on from "Starting a new chapter"

Once Ashley had found his quarters at the installation and made himself comfortable, he made sure to take a shower and put one fresh uniform. Feeling refreshed and much better after the long Runabout journey, he moved over to his desk panel and pulled up the deck listings and specs of the Hawkeye Island layout.

He was still getting his head around the fact that he wasn't serving on board a starship or a space station but in fact a planet based installation. It was something new and something he saw as part of the new challenge. As he studied the deck layouts and also got his head around the various operational requirements of the buildings, there was also the allure of the beach.

It had been quite some time since Ashley had been anywhere near a beach and he made a note to go and take a walk at some stage to get his bearings around this new location.

As he stood up from the desk, Ashley decided to take a walk to locate Operations and to go and check-in with the base Commanding Officer, a Brigadier General Leah Katana. He also needed to pay the Chief Medical Officer a visit, however, that could be done on the way to finding Operations and speaking with the new CO.

Making his way to the nearest turbolift, Ashley requested the Operations level and stood as the car made its way to his destination. He was also curious to see how a planetside Operations layout would look, having served onboard starships only.

Leah had just arrived in her office after getting settled and seeing her husband. Her office was huge, she even had her own observation lounge for important meetings beside the normal one for Staff meetings. She was starting to get set up when the Administrative Assistant paged that she had an officer requesting to see her. "Send him in," Leah replied.

Once he arrived and had announced himself, the aide told Ashley that he could go into the Observation Lounge where the Brigadier would meet him. Ashley walked in and stood to attention as he waited to be seen. As the Brigadier looked up, Ashley announced himself.

"Lieutenant Commander Ashley Solomon, reporting for duty, ma'am. I'm your new Chief Of Operations," he said.

She looked at him for a moment before saying anything to see if she could get a feel for him. "Welcome Commander." Leah finally replied as she stood extending her hand towards him.

Ashley shook her hand confidently as she welcomed him. He already started to feel a little ease coming in as he continued.

"It's a pleasure to serve you, ma'am. I will admit that its the first time I have had a planetary base as a posting," he carried on. "I'm looking forward to finding out more about the base and how I can maintain the good reputation you have already built here."

On the journey over, Ashley had made sure to try and find out some more about Hawkeye Island as a post and what to expect once he arrived and so far, he hadn't been let down with what he saw.

"However I'm not familiar with the area. I was hoping you could tell me some more about where we stand and what we could end up dealing with," he enquired.

She looked at him with a raised eyebrow, "We're on Raeya III in the Raeya system. Hawkeye Island is on Rhanda Isles, which was gifted to Starfleet." She she started as she handed him a padd with all that information. "Well that remains to be seen, there is the Eternal Light which is a faction of the Raeyan people who are against Starfleet." She started, "but so far we haven't seen them yet," she stated.

"There is the activity of the Typhon Pact, but haven't heard anything more on them as of yet," Leah added looking at him.

Ashley took the PADD from her and put it under his arm "I appreciate the info, I'll have a read and look into this further," he explained. "I just want to get up to speed as soon as I can so that I know who and what we're dealing within the local area."

He relaxed a little as the conversation continued on. "So, from what you've said, we not only have a faction of locals to be concerned with, but also a possibility of dealing with the Typhon Pact? it sounds like life definitely won't be dull here," he added. Know this meant that he would be on his guard more, potentially being as aware as the rest of the bass crew were. Knowing that they faced hostility on the ground as well as from the stars offered a busier assignment.

"May I ask what brought you here ma'am?" he inquired.

"To keep this out of the hands of the Typhon Pact, to protect this planet and Starfleet assets here." Leah said with a sigh, "Plus Starfleet felt I was the best for the job." Leah added.

"Starfleet always assigns the right people for the right job," Ashley answered. "And in this case, your previous knowledge is obviously seen as a benefit to leading this base and making sure that the Typhon Pact don't get their hands on it." He stood fast for a moment.

"Forgive me if I seem a bit eager, I also have good reason to be serving here with some trepidation if I'm honest. You'll get your best from me, that goes without saying, however, I just need to settle myself with an issue that I have encountered on the way here, something I wasn't aware of." He thought it best to raise the family name issue now so that she was fully aware of the situation.

She raised an eyebrow, "Can I ask what you mean?" Leah asked looking at him.

Ash stood tall as he decided to be straight with his CO. "My understanding of the star charts of this system, reading them on the way here, leads me to believe that the nearest starbase to us is Starbase 400," he began, seeing that Katana followed his train of thought. "I don't have a great history with the family name...in fact, I'm considered somewhat of a black sheep in the family. I was hidden away from the rest of my siblings for reasons that I'm still not sure about."

He took a breath as he paused. "My brother Jack serves on board Starbase 400 and I'm personally hopeful that we don't cross paths where possible, family reunions that involve myself haven't gone well in the past and I'm cautious that with any potential Typhon Pact issues, that could happen. I thought you should be aware."

She nodded, "I doubt we will run into him anytime soon but thank you for informing me." Leah replied as she looked at him, "The only thing I got for you is to get Hawkeye Island back up to par, there are some systems in a few places that were not touched by the last crew but we need everything up to 100% in all our buildings." Leah replied as she took a sip of her tea.

"I'll let you get to work as I am sure you're wanting to meet with your team and get to work," Leah added with a smile.

"Thank you ma'am," he said as he turned on his heel and made his way out of her office. As Ashley walked out, he made his way to the Operation Centre to see what was waiting for him.
